Taking Charge of Stress

There are many ways to reduce the physical and emotional impact that stressors produce. One way is to change your mind about how we relate to people and situations. It is your choice to react to any situation constructively or with destructive, hostile and negative thinking. You can choose to let something irritate you or take it in stride.

Another way you can manage how your mind creates stress is to learn how to express your feelings and needs firmly and honestly, yet in a way that is comfortable for both parties. To do this you have to believe that you have the right to state your own feelings, beliefs, and to request appropriate changes.

You have heard the phrase, “give me a break.” Scheduling time for fun and relaxation gives your body and mind a break from daily routine and pressures.  It’s better to choose an activity that adds variety to your work time. For example, if you work under deadline pressures choose an activity that you can do at your own pace. If you have a job that requires taking care of others, give yourself permission to do something just for yourself.

Brisk exercise is one of the most effective ways of reducing stress and tension.  You may not be able to harness the pace of life around you, but you can control your readiness to cope with it by becoming physically active.

The body not only possesses the ability to be stressed, but the ability to relax.  The relaxation response occurs naturally in us to some degree.  Each time we have a stress response the body tries to restore itself back to equilibrium.  Problems arise if you trigger too many stress responses and never adequately dissipate your stress.
