Relaxation Techniques to Reduce Stress On-The-Spot

Hectic lifestyle got you down? Relax a little…forget about it!

Any repetitive action can be a source of meditation.   Walking, swimming, painting, knitting — any activity that keeps your attention calmly in the present moment is a form of meditation.

Is your mind too talkative to meditate?   Try a peaceful “dreamscape.” Visualize anything that keeps your thoughts away from current tension. It could be your favorite vacation spot or wrapping up in a cozy sweater or comfy robe.

Being stressed is indicated by shallow breathing and a racing heart. But calm is associated with relaxed breathing. Try this: Let out a big sigh, dropping your chest and exhaling through your lips. Now, take a breath from your lower belly — your center!  Feel your breath coming in and going out of your body as your mind is focused and calm. Repeat 10 times, relaxing a little more each breath you take.

Pay attention to what is going on—mindfulness is the here-and-now approach to living! It is what makes life richer and more meaningful. If you are in the outdoors — enjoy the scenery, take the time to take it all in! Be present at the moment.

When you find yourself at your wit's end — on the verge of exploding after a long day — give yourself a time-out. Go to a place that is quiet. Take a few moments to breathe and concentrate on calming your heartbeat and all the tension in your body. Relax-stress CAN wait!

Focus on something that triggers a positive image.  Look at a photo of your pet or memento from a vacation — whatever it is, the thought of the image will help you’re your breathing, relax tense muscles as well as put a smile on your face!
