Finding balance with alcohol consumption and mental well-being

Published: March 24, 2025

As we raise a glass to life’s celebrations, it's important to ask: Is alcohol helping or hurting our mental well-being?

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, a time to reflect on how alcohol affects our lives, relationships and overall well-being. According to Gallup, 65% of U.S. adults enjoy drinking alcohol for the relaxation it brings, the celebratory atmosphere it creates, and how it complements meals and social situations. While there's nothing wrong with enjoying a drink from time to time, it's essential to find balance and be mindful of how alcohol can affect well-being.

Alcohol’s impact on mental health

Alcohol, while initially relaxing, can negatively impact mental health. As a depressant, regular alcohol consumption disrupts brain chemicals vital for mood regulation. This can lead to hangovers characterized by exhaustion, dehydration, and anxiety. Frequent hangovers, along with disruption of sleep and concentration, can create a harmful cycle for both physical and mental well-being.

Healthy ways to curb alcohol consumption

It may be difficult to entirely avoid occasions to drink so consider these simple steps to reduce alcohol intake.

  • Drink a glass of water between every drink to stay hydrated
  • Plan ahead when attending social events to limit your consumption
  • Tell a friend about your plan to cut back and ask for support
  • Try a non-alcoholic “mocktail” after a stressful day
  • Spend time with friends and family who don’t drink

Life will present many occasions to consume alcohol. If you’re struggling to maintain a healthy balance, seeking help is a sign of strength.
