Burnout Doesn't Take Summer Breaks

Published: May 23, 2025

Everyone talks about how amazing summer is. The warmer weather. The extra plans. The break from your routine. But no one talks about how exhausting the season can be when you’re already running on empty.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, fried – not just from a sunburn – or oddly off when everything should feel good, you’re not alone.

While people are posting pictures from the beach and rooftop hangouts, you might be:

  • Hitting snooze five times because everything feels heavy
  • Showing up saying, “I’m good!” but actually feel mentally checked out
  • On vacation, but your Teams status is still green
  • Overthinking everything, even when you’re trying to relax

It’s not laziness. It’s not even just stress. It’s burnout. And burnout doesn’t take summer breaks. In fact, the pressure to relax can make it even worse.

Let’s talk facts

According to reports from AP News and The New York Post:

  • 1 in 3 workers in the U.S. feel more burned out during the summer
  • 67% of people can’t fully relax, even when they’re on PTO
  • Nearly half of people say unplugging from work is impossible

If your summer feels more like a survival than a reset, know this: You’re not alone – you’re just feeling overwhelmed.

Try these simple ways to combat burnout

  • Take a pause. Five minutes of relaxation is more powerful than you’d think.
  • Say “No!” to extra plans, pressure or anything that may drain you more.
  • Move your body by going for a walk around the block, stretching or whatever helps you feel better.
  • Talk to someone about your situation because carrying it alone just adds more weight.
