Connecting with Positive People Can Help You Thrive

Published: Dec. 1, 2024

Surrounding yourself with people who uplift you and inspire growth is pivotal to your long-term happiness and success. Their positivity fuels your own mood, turning challenges into triumphs.

However, finding people who ignite your best self can be difficult. While you have the choice to be happy, cultivating connections often demand alignment of values, aspirations, and energies. These unique compositions of strengths and weaknesses, experiences, and dreams can make compatibility rare but not impossible.

So how do you find these special people?

One way is to pay attention to how interacting with them make you feel. Here are five questions you can ask yourself:

Do you feel energized and happy around them? These feelings can ignite excitement and leave you feeling good about yourself.

Can they calm you quickly when you’re upset? A person whose presence and thoughtful words help bring a sense of peace can reassure you that things will be OK.

Do they help you see the world in a better light? Having someone who views their glass as half full rather than half empty can help you see the positive sides of situations.

Do you feel accepted rather than judged when talking with them? If you’re comfortable being around this person and not worried about what they think, then that’s the foundation of a genuine relationship.

Do they pick up on your mood quickly? When they respond to your moods without taking offense, it shows that they accept your feelings and know when to just let you be or when to offer support.

The more of these questions you can answer “yes” to the more you’ll benefit from investing time and effort into building and sustaining a positive, mutually beneficial relationship and set the stage for you to thrive.

However, when challenges or differences arise in a relationship, remember to approach those situations as learning opportunities. If you keep an open mind and focus on the things that make you compatible, you can find ways to understand each other's differences and continue to build the relationship.
